Emily Mary Lamb and her son, described here as Lady Cowper and Lord Fordwich, are depicted in this signed and dated watercolor by Buck. 'Emily Mary Lamb was the daughter of Sir Peniston Lamb, 1st Viscount Melbourne and Elizabeth Milbanke. She married, firstly, Sir Peter Leopold Louis Francis Nassau Cowper, 5th Earl Cowper, son of Sir George Nassau Cowper, 3rd Earl Cowper and Hannah Anne Gore, on 20 July 1805. She married, secondly, Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston on 16 December 1839. She died on 11 September 1869. As a result of her marriage, Emily Mary Lamb was styled as Countess Cowper on 20 July 1805. From 20 July 1805, her married name became Cowper. From 16 December 1839, her married name became Temple.' He was the son of Sir Peter Leopold Louis Francis Nassau Cowper, 5th Earl Cowper and Emily Mary Lamb. He married Anne Florence de Grey, Baroness Lucas, daughter of Sir Thomas Philip Robinson, 2nd Earl de Grey of Wrest and Lady Henrietta Frances Cole, on 7 October 1833.
