The Tate GalleryDescription:
This study is very similar to another preparatory study in the British Museum (cgjc0799). In both works Barry gave the recording angel on the left a large wing, but in the other version he pasted a contoured piece of paper over the wing and sketched in the background on top of it. Both this drawing and the other version (cgjc0799) differ substantially from Barry's first conception of the image which is now in the Ashmolean Museum. Gone in these later versions are the historical figures, who were inappropriate to an allegorical composition. Even though, as revealed in the inscription in this drawing, Barry had second thoughts about dropping this vignette from his final version, its removal creates a more monumental effect.(Pressly, 146)Role:
