dc.description | William Gandy was the son of English painter James Gandy (1619-1689). The present painting is a portrait of Matthew Pear. A note on the Exeter City Council website states: 'This oil painting, by William Gandy, was passed down through the Pear family and presented to the museum in 1893. It shows Matthew Pear, Sword bearer of Exeter, and his brother Philip Pear. The painting must date to c. 1715, since Matthew Pear became an apprentice in 1725. Both brothers are recorded as freemen of Exeter in 1739: William a surgeon, Philip a sergemaker.' | en |
