Abstract:
A number of philosophers and social scientists have investigated the use of
lotteries to make various kinds of decisions. These investigations have not, however, produced a rigorous definition of a lottery. This paper offers such a definition, and explains how a lottery fitting this definition can be fitted into the decision-making process. It does not explore the question of why one might wish to use a lottery in decision-making, but it does point out several ways in which the definition offered here should facilitate efforts to answer this question.
