The acceleration in the rate of economic growth in Ireland in. the last ten years or so compared with the earlier post-war years has been accompanied by a very considerable rise in the proportion of income saved. This factor has been of crucial importance in permitting, if not actually causing, faster growth. In the absence of the rise in the savings ratio it would have been impossible to devote so large aproportion of national production to investment: an attempt to do so would have involved an increase in the other source of investment resources, foreign disinvestment, to a level that could not conceivably be maintained.
