This thesis, entitled "Calix[4]arene-based hosts for lanthanide and anion binding: synthesis and physical studies" is divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the chemistry of calix[4]arenes, an introduction to lanthanide-binding ligands, with emphasis on MRI application, and to anion sensing. The advantages to contrast agent development offered by the enhanced permeation and retention (EPR) effect of tumours is outlined. This chapter also describes the various intentions and aims of this work.
