dc.description.abstract | The objective of this thesis was to examine the application of economic evaluation within the Irish healthcare setting. In so doing, the author sought to develop skills in indirect comparison, economic modelling, value of information analysis and prescribing database analysis. The therapeutic area chosen was the new oral anticoagulants. Rivaroxaban (Xarelto®) and dabigatran (Pradaxa®) were licensed in Ireland in 2008 for the primary prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in adults undergoing elective total hip replacement (THR) and total knee replacement (TKR). | |
